Diary for 2022
Monthly Members Meetings are the core of our events calendar. We meet on the last Wednesday of the month. Typically, there's some simple sight-read ensemble, a break for coffee and then an opportunity for members to perform - solo, in duet, or any combination you like. All standards of player are welcome. But treat it as a performance and put in a bit of practice beforehand.
Other events in the calendar include recitals in our Celebrity Concert Series, often at Turner Sims, Southampton, but sometimes in collaboration with other venues and festivals. Occassional workshops and other events feature from time to time.
Our programme for 2022 is particularly full. This is our 50th birthday year and we mean to celebrate it in style. Our anniversay programm will be added to during the year but see what's available already (below) and if you would like a single-page summary to print and post on your noticeboard, fridge door or wherever, download this pdf.....

Celebrity Concert with Daniela Rossi
Turner Sims, Southampton
A Celebrity Concert featuring the Argentine guitarist Daniela Rossi
SCGS Members will benefit from a member discount on tickets for this concert. Get your discount code here
Described by the composer/guitarist Leo Brouwer as ‘…a performer with a very rare combination of energy, expression, and perfect technique‘, Daniela Rossi is an exciting classical guitarist from Bahía Blanca, Argentina, now resident in the UK. She has studied with many leading guitarists and teachers worldwide, including Eduardo Isaac, Paolo Pegoraro, Adriano del Sal, and Graham Devine.

Daniela enjoys collaborating with contemporary composers. The works in her Turner Sim’s programme by Dusan Bogdanovic, Vincent Lindsey-Clark and Jeffrey McFadden were all written specially for her. Her programme begins and ends with music by composers whose music she has released on disc, Giulio Regondi and John Duarte.

Golden Jubilee Christmas Party
and Recital
The Winchester Room, St Boniface Church
The last opportunity in 2022 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Sothempton Classical Guitar Society
The Christmas recital will feature Tom Hodgkinson.
Tom Hodgkinson, ATCL, is a 17-year-old classical guitarist, currently studying under Rebecca Coulthard at Junior Trinity Laban in London. He has a genuine passion for the music of Bach but also performs much of the best-known classical guitar repertoire. He has recently been talent-spotted by guitarist, John Williams, with whom he now enjoys the occasional lesson via Zoom!
Tom has had great success in a number of competitions, including being a Gold winner in the New Talent British International Youth Music competition in 2020. He won the prestigious Tony Gill trophy in the Leicester Guitar Competition in 2021, and was awarded the Director’s Prize for Excellence and the Aiden Massey String Prize at Junior Trinity Laban. In his spare time, Tom is an accomplished jazz guitarist and composer. He hopes to become a professional classical guitarist in the future, and loves performing!
His May 2022 recital at St Bride's Church, Fleet Street can be heard on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3F-zrKhfLM
Our members meeting on 30 November is a Composers' Night. We would like solos, duets etc in part 2 of our meeting to feature composers or arrangers associated with the Society. The phrase "associated with" can be interpreted fairly liberally. It could be:
-
a piece by one of our published members. Go to our website for some ideas HERE
- unpublished pieces offered free of charge by current and former SCGS members on their curated website page HERE
-
a piece composed or arranged by a guitarist who has performed at a Society concert - like Laura Snowden, pictured in the gallery above.
Thinking caps on, folks, and when you've decided email Brian Tait
and tell him you would like to play at our November meeting.

Celebrity Concert
Turner Sims, Southampton
Vincent Lyndsey-Clark and Roland Chadwick feature in the first recital in our Celebrity Concert series for 2022
The concert programme will include the premier performance of Timespan, a piece commissioned by SCGS from Vincent Lindsey-Clark. Society members will perform the piece conducted by Mark Eden, with the composer taking the solo part.
Roland Chadwick
The Australian guitarist and composer, Roland Chadwick, received a guitar for his 13th birthday and almost immediately began to compose. After 3 years of guitar lessons and with no training in composition, he wrote Dances for Winter Oakwood, a suite of pieces still performed around the world to this day.

As a recitalist, he made his début at the Sydney Opera House Broadwalk Theatre in 1998. Tours of Australia, Italy, England, Sweden, Mexico, and the USA followed. Arriving in England in 1997, he gave concerts in the Philharmonic Hall with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and played for all the important guitar societies in England.
In 2002 he and Vincent formed the Modern Guitar Trio with Roland Gallery, and they have performed at major classical music festivals in England and Germany.

Roland’s output as a composer has been prodigious and has ranged from works for solo classical guitar, art song, ballet, experimental jazz, guitar concerti to prog blues.
Vincent Lindsey-Clark
English guitarist Vincent Lindsey-Clark is a well-known composer for the instrument. He writes for students and professionals, and his work has been used extensively by the major exam boards and performed all round the world. Distinguished performers who have played his music include David Russell, Gary Ryan, Craig Ogden, Amanda Cook, Irina Kulikova, Daniela Rossi and many more.

His debut as a performer was at the Wigmore Hall in 1983. He became a member of the Segovia Trio in 1987 and is currently part of the Modern Guitar Trio.
Vincent has been a regular tutor and performer at the Sydney Guitar Summer School in Australia and was invited to the Taranaki Guitar Summer School in 2016. In 2019 he performed and was a tutor at the inaugural Nelson Classical and Flamenco Guitar Festival in New Zealand’s beautiful South Island.
